Sacrifice

 It is difficult to fully appreciate the depth of sacrifices that slaves made when they helped fund and erect, The First African Baptist Church in Savannah, Georgia. This local congregation was formed in 1777. Their legacy continues to produce eternal fruit  because it was built on the one true foundation.

When I think about the physical and emotional cost slaves endured, I am humbled to think of how little I forgo to advance the cause of Christ.  After working long grueling hours  in local plantations consider this fact, slaves built this in their “ free” time.

Our tour guide is a member of the church.
Visit the church's website to have a better view of the stained glass windows.

We glance back at the  pipe organ and the choir stand.
This building survived the Civil War and several hurricanes.

The following words are from the hymn,
The Church’s One Foundation
(Text S.Stone  ( 1839 -1900)
(Samuel Wesley (1810 – 1876)

“The church’s one foundation
Is Jesus Christ her Lord;
She is his new creation
By water and the Word.
From heaven he came and sought her
To be his holy bride;
With his own blood he bought her
And for her life he died.

Elect from every nation,
Yet one o’er all the earth;
Her character of salvation,
One Lord, one faith, one birth
One holy name she blesses,
Partakes one holy food,
And to one hope she presses
With every grace endued”

Gary Hamel is a current business guru, but his words ring true, “A noble purpose inspires sacrifice, stimulates innovation and encourages perseverance.”
