Monday Musings ... Black History

During the month of February, many African American Churches celebrate Black History Month.   Congregations often sing, "Lift Every Voice and Sing",  pay tribute to historical figures, and have  school age children participate in special programs.  These celebrations remind us of  the collective milestones that African Americans have achieved in the spite  of the obstacles that were endured.

Yesterday, our church celebrated  Black History. Our children dressed in costumes, recited poems, and gave short speeches. We listened as the students shared in speeches the accomplishments of scientists, attorneys, doctors, singers, actors, scientists, chemists, athletes, astronauts, and so many more...

As much as we think we know, it is wise to remain humble and prepare to discover more. Yesterday, after the school presentation, we enjoyed  presentation regarding William Wells Brown.

Adults and children sat enthralled by the performance of  Virgil Covington, Jr. as he portrayed  William Wells Brown: How I God my Name. Who is Willam Wells Brown? He was a Kentucky native celebrated as the first  published African American novelist and playwright. Black History American is not just for African Americans -- it is for all Americans.

Who inspired  Black History Month begin? Carter G. Woodson  What do you think of these words of Carter G. Woodson?

"If you can control a mans thinking you don't have to worry about his actions. If you can determine what a man thinks you don't have to worry about what he will do. If you can make a man believe that he is inferior you don't have to compel him to seek and inferior status, he will do that without being told and if you can make a man believe that he is justly an outcast, you don't have to order him to the back door, he will go to the back door on his own and if there is no back door, the very nature of the man will demand that you build one."

Celebrating history reminds of the our courageous past and inspires us.

Come, my children,

"Come, my children, listen to me;
I will teach you the fear of the LORD.
Whoever of you loves life
and desires to see many good days,
keep your tongue from evil
and your lips from telling lies.
Turn from evil and do good,
seek peace and pursue it.
The eyes of the LORD are on the righteous,
and his ears are attentive to their cry;
but the face of the LORD is against those
who do evil,
to blot our their name from the earth.
The righteous cry out, and the LORD hears
them;
he delivers them from all their troubles.
The LORD is close to the brokenhearted
and saves those who are crushed in
spirit.
The righteous person may have many
troubles,
but the LORD delivers him from them all.
he protects all his bones,
not one of them will be broken.
Psalm 34: 11- 20

Friendship Friday

"There is nothing in the world better than a friend, unless it is a friend
with chocolate."
Linda Grayson

I am humble by God's many gifts to me. I count friends as gifts from God.
I appreciate 'L''s  faithful obedience to the Lord Jesus.   She is a also a loving daughter, wife, mother, and sister. I am grateful to call her friend.  She is a blessing to many as she serves at our church.

Earlier this week, we distributed Valentine bags to Read to Succeed students. Each of the students received a sweet bag of treats.

Wayfarers

"To despair over politics -
regardless of which side of the
politics divide one
lands on - as many
Christians have done in the
current apocalyptic
political climate, is to
forget that we are but
wayfarer in this land.
Choosing hope  -
whether  amid the
annihilation of the
world of merely a
political breakdown -
virtuous."

Tasty Tuesday

Our Cooking Light Group has transformed to the meeting for lunch. What is the glue that holds this group together?  Very simply... friendship.
"A friend is what the heart needs all the time."
Henry Van Dyke

Monday Musings ... deception

Are you easily deceived? Are you able to be  calm and gather enough information about a person, situation, or problem to avoid being deceived? Are you above being tricked ?

One historical example baffles me.

It is difficult to understand how some people could have been deceived about Hitler. Yet, Neville Chamberlain, Lord Halifax, and Nevile Henderson all were deceived by Hitler. On the other hand,
" Winston Churchill, for example, never believed for a moment that Hitler was anything more than a duplicitous thug." Malcolm Gladwell

I find it hard to understand how intelligent people can be deceived.

Yet, we can be deceived. The consequences of deception can be costly. One online source states the Bible has 59 verses about deception. What is wonderful about these verses? These verses can prove to be helpful in daily living if applied  and put into practice.

Here is one of my favorite verses: "Do not be deceived: Evil company corrupts good habits."
1 Corinthians 15:33

Choosing our company is indeed important.

Tasty Tuesday

"The laziest man I ever met put popcorn in his pancakes
so they could turn over by themselves."
W.C. Fields.

These blueberry pancakes were delicious.

Monday Musings ... Super Bowl

We did not host a Super Bowl Party on Sunday. Instead, we went to my favorite sport bar. Double Dogs! This sports bar is my favorite place to watch a game.
 Why?
Here are few reasons.
The different reactions to the every part of the experience.
Fans applauded after the singing of the Star Spangled Banner
Cheers or groans when a team advanced on the field.
I love the  crowd's collective laughter when a commercial was funny.
We did not stay for the entire game. Just the first quarter.

I was so nervous I could not watch the game. Then, I had a great surprise.

Yay! Super Bowl Champions Kansas City Chiefs

Friendship Friday

Our friendship is a picture of opposites and similarities.  She is from the West Coast. I'm from middle America. She is an only child. I am the youngest of five.  Her eyebrows are perfect. Well, let's just say,  my eyebrows need some help.

Each week, we see each other for training,  planning, serving, praying, and co-leading  for BSF on Monday  evenings.

What is the single most important thing we share? Our faith in the Lord Jesus.
