Roots and Heritage

Roots and Heritage
FESTIVAL
Lexington, KY

Honoring the Past.
Celebrating the present.
Embracing the Future

“For over 25 years the weekend following Labor Day – the Roots and Festival has been a pinnacle of regional diversity providing entertainment and education for all ages.”  Check out more about this festival here :Roots and Heritage Festival

This morning, the Roots and Heritage Festival and Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc., sponsored the inaugural Heritage Scholarship Writing Contest with a Heritage Scholarship Breakfast.  This event was part of the larger festival.

The theme for this year’s writing contest was  “How does knowing your heritage open doors to the future."

Students were able to use the power of their intellect and words to illustrate the importance of heritage.  As they weaved their personal stories with the history of slavery and the civil rights movement, they began to create a vision for themselves that honors their past.

Pet of the week ... a goat

Visiting in my cousin's living room, I gaze out to her backyard. What did I just see? A horse running... I have to investigate.  Yes, clearly in the distance there is  horse.

Yes, there are horses clearly running in a pasture. I have to remind myself, we are in the city limits of Louisville.  So this week's pet is a goat.

"The practice of keeping a goat in a stall with a nervous horse has been around for a long time..." Bette Gabriel

Christine Winter also noted,"that goats often serve as a strange and calming influence on horses."
Next time I visit, I need to bring carrots. Clearly the horses are accustomed to having carrots as treats.

Tasty Tuesday

Breakfast for dinner...

One of my favorite childhood memories was when my mom and dad prepared breakfast for dinner. As an adult, I think this may have been a budget stretcher for my parents. Scrambled eggs and toast…  perfect dinner meal.

This was actually a breakfast for breakfast meal.

Sunday Scripture

Proverbs 24:30 – 34 GNV
“I walked through the fields and vineyards of a
lazy, stupid person.
They were full of thorns and bushes and overgrown
with weeds. The stone wall around them had
fallen down.
I looked at this, thought about it, and learned
a lesson from it:
Go ahead and take your nap; go ahead and sleep.
Fold your hands and rest awhile,
but while you are asleep, poverty will attack
You like an armed robber."
