On Saturday, January 7, 2017, I joined with over sixty members of
the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Beta Gamma Omega Chapter in
Lexington to watch the movie, Hidden Figures.
As sisters in this remarkable sorority, we watched with pride the story of Katherine
G. Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan, and Mary Jackson. Each of these women, were also members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. The power of sisterhood is evident in this historical narrative.
As NASA mathematicians, these three remarkable women
exhibited courage, character, and intellect at they faced the challenges of
living in the era of Jim Crow. Instead of becoming bitter because of the obstacles they faced, they become better. In each instance they rose to the occasion with
determination.
After watching the movie, I look forward to reading the
Margot Lee Shetterly’s book,
Hidden Figures: The American Dream and the Untold Story of
Black Women Mathematicians who helped win the space race.
“Their dark skin, their gender their economic status – none of
those were acceptable excuses for not giving their fullest rein to their
imaginations and ambitions.” Margot Lee Shetterly
