“150 years ago, enslaved African Americans were freed by the
13th Amendment.” Last week, Yvonne Giles spoke to UK's Donovan Forum
Series regarding the Emancipation’s Legacy.
Individuals who live in Central Kentucky may be familiar
with Ms. Giles from her appearances on KET a PBS television station, her local
speaking engagments or have read her book, Stilled
Voices Yet Speak. We are fortunate that she is the local historian who is
to the go to person regarding African American history in Lexington and Fayette
County.
While Ms. Giles recounted the horror of slavery she also
emphasized the legacy of a slaves who made the largest economic contribution to
the United States before the Civil War. African American History is American History.
