It's easy to give thanks when life is going well. How do I give thanks when things are difficult? It takes a lifetime of practice. I am grateful for some amazing role models. No matter the challenges, my parents were wonderful role models. My reaction to difficult circumstances is often automatic, I try to give thanks...
Does that sound a bit odd? Every day, I have an opportunity to practice this truth.

Last Monday night, I was sitting in a hotel parking lot, my car would not start. Jerry was entering data on the GPS for my four hour trip home. Thank God the car did not sputter and stop on the interstate or at a rest stop. Thank God, Jerry was there to help me. The car dealership was less than a mile away from the hotel. I could go and and on about the provision of God.

Choosing to be grateful

Choosing to attend a BSF Seminar is time well spent. Deciding to join other women fresh from daytime responsibilities is good. Gathering in a cozy room at a local church, I am glad to be with these women.

After attending the seminar, a wave of sadness and grief washed over me. Unexpected feelings surfaced...I had been fine. Then a text triggered some emotions in my heart... As I was responding to the text, tears began dripping down my face. Crying while driving...

Once home, I check email. Read an email from I ~ Bloom Inspiring Women.

This week... focus on I Choose to Be Grateful! Another timely reminder for me to focus on choosing to be grateful.

Are you searching for the best oatmeal in town? Here are some options. McDonald's now serves oatmeal as part of their breakfast menu. good...Oatmeal is also a part of the menu @ Chick Fil -A. Their oatmeal is better than McDonald's. In my opinion, Panera serves the best steel cut oatmeal in town. When I prepare Irish Oatmeal @ home it is lumpy.

Depending on the criteria for selection of oatmeal, home is cheaper. Panera has the best tasting steel cut oatmeal in town.

My brothers, great nieces, and great nephews...December visit

Years before I would enter a classroom, my parents instilled in me the love of learning. As the youngest child in my family, I was looking forward with anticipation to the day I would go to school.

I was not aware of all the life lessons I was learning at home. What were some of those lessons?…God's goodness and greatness, establishing a pattern for prayer, hard work, diligence, integrity, organization, respect, love, caring for others, value of daily routines, and a hunger to read…

Before, I could read, I would watch others read their Bibles, books, and newspapers. Although I could not read the words, I recited memorized prayers before I could read the Bible.

Visiting my niece’s home, I have always been impressed how her home has been a model in preparing her children for school and life. In each room everyday household items are labeled. I am sure that she is an excellent classroom teacher.

In January, we have new students and new books.

Tutoring adult education students is one of the joys of my week. Each week I look forward to the time spent in the classroom. The entire time I am teaching … I am smiling.

If you listen outside our classroom you will hear quiet conversations, words repeated in unison, and laughter. We work to create a safe learning environment. Laughter and fun are important ingredients in our classroom.

Faith in God

This particular quote is from January 3’s devotional from Today is the Word. You may access this daily devotional @ Today in the Word. This month’s focus is, “How does a godly person handle fear?” No matter the monthly focus, this daily devotional is part of my daily bread. Available online from any place in the world, Moody is equipping people to apply the word to their daily lives. Love it!

Resolutions, Goals or Intentions

This is the time of year where I finish my monthly and yearly goals. In December, the process begins for goal setting for the upcoming year. Each evening, I create a “To Do List” for the next day. At the top of my daily list, I include devotions and exercise. As the day progresses, I cross items off. At the end of each month, I revisit my goals. Then, I make adjustments.

Over the past several days, I have been considering intentions rather than goals. Why? My daughter shared a thought that I might consider intentions rather than goals. Then, she shared something else… To me, intentions are vague. In creating goals, I have action steps that are a part of the plan.

Still, I have been drawn to the idea of intentions. My interest peaked, I decided to do some research. Going to the computer, I Google the phrase Holy Intentions. On the first entry of page I discover a short blog entry by a Pastor Al Hughes of the Bible Baptist Church in Port Orchard. On the same page of the search, I read the Holy Father’s Prayer Intentions for 2012. Further down the page, I read the blog by Rabbi Joshua Runyan, titled, “Despite Holy Intentions, Ego Can Get in the Way.” Now I have a Jewish, Catholic, and Protestant perspective on intentions. Interesting reading, I suggest you take a minute and read the entries. They are very short readings and may be worth your time.

What did I discover? Resolutions, goals, or intentions they are impossible to keep in one’s own strength. I like what Jonathan Edwards wrote April 17, 1723, “Being sensible that I am unable to do anything without God’s help, I do humbly entreat him by his grace to enable me to keep these Resolutions, so far as they are agreeable to his for will for Christ’s sake.” You might Google Jonathan Edwards and read his resolutions. Reading his entire list may take only a few minutes. All I can say is Wow!

Post Office and Politics

In August of 2011, I launched an online book business. Since the launch of this resale site, I have sold nearly 80 books online. In the early days, I would ship a few books via UPS. As I examined the price of books verses the cost of shipping, I quickly went to the post office. UPS is way too expensive. I was not making any profit!

As a regular customer at the Post Office, my face has become familiar to many of the clerks. After several conversations, clerks informed me of the various mailing requirements. Today, I clearly understand the rules. United States Postal Service is critical to my small business.

Do I understand the politics and the budget issues of the post office? Not totally, but I am better informed than I was in July. Cost cutting measures and postage increases have not been able to make the USPS profitable. The deficit at the USPS cannot entirely attributed to the increase of emails, text messages, and on line bill paying.

One brief commercial on MSNBC illustrated one reason for the deficit. In this particular commercial there are two buildings on the screen. Money from one building is being channeled to another building. It appeared to illustrate the point of “robbing Peter to pay Paul.” My explanation may be lacking. Who created this commercial? Where can we go to get answers?

I suggest you call your congressional representative’s office to gain a better understanding of the issue. In May of 2012 the US Congress will be grapple issues of closures and potential layoffs. How will the issues be resolved? Who knows?

Whatever the issue, informed citizens are able to make informed decisions when addressing their elected officials. In addition, Christians are called to pray for those in elected offices. See 1 Timothy 2:1-2

My Aunt Mary has a gift for discovering treasures at rummage sales or consignment stores. I think she has a special radar. She is amazing!

Last week I took my first adventure in consignment shopping. While we were in South Carolina, I took an afternoon and went to two stores. Shopping List? No, I have a list in my head. My first stop was My Sister's Closet. Next on my list, I followed a recommendation from Robin to check out Scarlett Consignment Boutique. I was not disappointed. Designer clothes, purses, jewelery, shoes, jeans, and furniture were jammed packed in the stores I visited.

At the end of the day, I made one purchase.

Charleston ~ This city is rich in history. It is one of my favorite places to visit. Today, I was with a group for a tour of the city. It was a full day from morning until evening. As part of the tour, we were able to visit the Summeral Chapel on the campus of The Citadel.

“The outstanding glory of the building is its stained glass, which was designed and produced in the ateliers of the Pittsburgh Stained Glass Studios.”* In the chapel are “Class Windows”, they represent thirty events in Christ life.

Excitement! It is wonderful to wake up before the alarm goes off! I was pumped and excited about studying the Bible this morning. What a blessing. Last evening, I was a visitor at the Savannah Evening’s Bible Study Fellowship Class. This group is a part of an BSF International where women and men from all over the world are studying the same portion of scripture each week. Each week we have the opportunity to dig deep in God’s word for personal Bible Study. While I am away from home, I don’t even think about taking a vacation from praying and studying in God’s word.

Today I was visiting with other ladies at the resort. One of the ladies told me, when family visit me, they go to church with me. We don’t take vacations from church attendance. We had a lovely visit. It was interesting to learn about their regular hours of prayer.

Today was full… Bible Study…Aqua Fitness…breakfast…visit with new friends… hanging out with my husband… making ornaments…walking... shopping...dinner…

What does accountability look like to you? What questions prompt you to examine your actions and motives? Do you have a regular quiet time? One friend shared, when we intentionally seek accountability partners, we are seeking a deeper level of maturity. Earlier this fall, I was actively seeking friends to keep me accountable regarding my weight.
Here is one on line definition of accountability, according to discipleship tools.org, "Accountability is sharing in confidence, our heartfelt Christian sojourn in an atmosphere of trust so we can give an answer for what we do, see where we need help, understand our struggles and when we are weak, and be encouraged to stay on track, seek prayer, care and support when we fail and model guideposts for one another to keep us going."

Be honest, some people are just easy to love. It has been years since Pastor Simmons shared this truth in a teaching. His solid Biblical teaching set me on a firm foundation as a new Christian. As a member of a small congregation in a church outside Detroit, Michigan, I discovered how living in community with other believers can be a challenge.

Most of my friends as easy to love... we share common interests... we share a common faith... and care about issues that have eternal significance...

What are some common interests?... Most of us love animals... More importantly, we are students in Bible Study Fellowship. I met my neighbor and friend Jill as she was walking her dog. Now six years later, she is a treasured friend. We visited at my Open House on Tuesday. In a couple of weeks, I will visit her home. I think I will take pictures of her studio. What are your God given talents? Whatever your gifts... Please use them for the Glory of God.

Thanksgiving Worship Services

Some experiences are difficult to describe with words, they must be felt. How do I describe a worship service? Services are more than songs and a Bible message. Experiencing services is helpful to understand them. Before I came to faith in Christ, worship services at church made me uncomfortable. Church vocabulary, rituals, and songs were strange and unfamiliar to me. Then, I had my Damascus Road (Acts 9) experience.

After today’s message, our church offered a Thanksgiving meal for the community. Many of the individuals are already a part of the weekly feeding program offered at our church. Our church offers a safe place for individuals to be a part of a family that loves them. Individuals need not attend church to have a Thanksgiving meal. Serving those who are hurting, lonely, and homeless in our community must be experienced to be fully understood… words are inadequate to convey what happens.

In the past, we might have traveled in St. Louis, Dayton, or Anderson. I miss seeing family. While today was different, we remain thankful.

Last year I joined a group of women interested in learning to play Mah Jong. Now a year later, I am still very much a novice. Thankfully, I am a part of a wonderful group of women who are quick to share tips, strategies, and encouragement. Quick instructions... then we move on...

According to one web site, Mah Jong is described as, "The exciting game of Mah Jong has existed in one form or another for ages. It is interesting, fun, and stimulates the cognitive process of the brain. ...Studies demonstrates that by engaging the cognitive abilities of the brain, the mind remains flexible and sharp, and Mah Jong elicits a beneficial neural response when played."

Shelby Foote described the civil war as central to all our lives. While individuals may differ on its centrality to their lives, I think in some measure, we continue to be shaped by the outcome of the war. Can we discover truths as we discuss the issues of the Civil War? I think so.

In September of this year, I offered a list of possible books as reading selections for book club members to consider reading for November. The evening book group selected A Separate Country by Robert Hicks. Last night’s discussion was not disappointing. Our group enjoyed a rich conversation regarding the Civil War, the Battle of Franklin, John Bell Hood, New Orleans, race, injustice, redemption, and the legacy of war. As the discussion continued long into the evening, we discovered we had more questions than answers. Now, we are pondering a road trip to Nashville and Franklin. On the agenda… the Carter House and Carton Mansion.

Driving home last night, I was thinking about visiting my former hometown. Then, I was thinking about spending time with dear friends… Hester Hamilton, Wanda Guy, Diane Cohn, Linda Alexander, Rita Dozier, Mrs. Cross, Bill Peach, Priscilla Bright, Doris McMillian, the Nelsons, the list goes on...

It is a joy shopping for Christmas gifts. I enjoy selecting toys and gifts that will fit nicely into a shoe box. This year, I discovered a little car that lights up and makes sounds. In another aisle, I found little farm animals that oink and moo. In two shoe boxes, I added toys, crayons, paper, socks, wooden cars, wrapped candy, and toothbrushes. Each year, our pastor encourages us to participate in Operation Christmas Child. It is a joy to join others from our church to provide gifts for this effort. These boxes will be shipped to countries all over the world. God has given us the resources to be a part of this ministry. We are grateful to Him.

Do you have a favorite childhood memory? Some of my favorite memories are of summers with my grandparents. While my parents worked, our days were with our grandparents. My grandpa was an amazing man. He told stories... he recited poems, played checkers, ate candy bars, and went fishing on the banks of the White River.

He would often share stories of his childhood in Jeffersonville, Indiana. We would listen to his stories of his military service. He was a Buffalo Solider. Congress established the Negro Cavalry in September 21, 1866 as the first peace time all-black regiment in the U.S. Army. Buffalo Soldiers become a nickname of the all black regiment. Today as we are celebrating Veterans Day, I was thinking about him.

Every morning after reading the Upper Room, he would read the morning newspaper.

Today, I am reflecting on this past year. Tomorrow is my birthday. I am pondering some questions. Did I make the most of each day? Did I fritter away time on things that have no eternal significance? Did I live with courage, boldness, and effectiveness for the Lord? Did I reflect on my monthly goals? Was I occupied more with me than God? Do family and friends know that God is most dear to me? Did I let fear rule in my life where God should reign? How can I live a life that most honors God and gives Him glory.

Part of my reflections were a part of today's birthday lunch conversation.

Fall Retreat at French Lick, Indiana

Over twenty- five years ago, I attended a training that was held at the French Lick Springs Hotel. As a staff member of at a YWCA, training was an important part of our work in addressing issues related to women, children, and families.

Today, I am attending a Fall Retreat at this same hotel. This retreat allows women to celebrate success, sharpen business skills, and gain inspiration. All of the training... MK to working to enrich the lives of women.

After tonight's activities, I took a moment to relax and read some of the hotel's history....

"The hotel was built in 1845 Dr. Bowles. After a fire in 1897, it was rebuilt and enlarged. In 1901, Tom Taggart, mayor of Indianapolis brought the property. French Lick Springs Hotel gained international prominence under the ownership of Tom Taggart. Under Taggart's leadership the hotel became the unofficial headquarters of the Democratic National Party. It was here that Franklin Delano Roosevelt rounded up support for the party's presidential nomination. As the literature details, this hotel does have a rich and colorful history." How do you explain the holiday Halloween to people to new to the United States? What vocabulary words will I use? Last week, I created a word search using on line tool. In addition, I used other tools to build on their existing vocabulary. Spelling list: autumn, fall, tree, leaves, candy, corn, trick, treat, pumpkin, and so on... Here are interesting some words that appear in many languages: witch, spells, curses are some of the words. At the end of class, we had a party. Each of the students had a treat bag... apples, grapes, and a few sweet treats.

Gardening in the winter?

Gardening… Depending on the season, I will always find something beautiful in garden centers. Over the years, my garden planning has improved. No more wasting plants that will wither and die on the deck.

As a result of sounder planning, I am better able to enjoy the produce of summer garden. This past summer, I had peppers, herbs, tomatoes, and eggplant. Now as winter approaches, I hope to enjoy pansies peaking out from the snow-covered ground.

As the temperatures continue to slide toward freezing I will move my banana plant to garage. Will it survive the winter? We shall see.

I like small independent stores in contrast to the big box garden stores. The small stores offer a blend of plants, gardening supplies, seeds, and an eclectic inventory for shoppers. Earlier this month I was able to do window-shopping at a store in Greensboro, North Carolina. The pictures are from the store in North Carolina. No winter garden... Lord wiling, I will plan my garden this winter.

Listening to the weather forecast last night, I planned a early morning walk with Jackson. I was hoping to dodge the rain. On most weekday mornings, I exercise after six. Then, Jackson waits patiently until he hears the television go silent. He must me thinking dog thoughts, “Now it is my turn.” As soon as I grab my jacket and keys, he is ready to go!

Jackson did get his walk in this morning. After his walk, I went to Chick Fil… the oatmeal and fruit for me… a dog treat for Jackson. He was a happy dog.

Now, Jackson is quiet… a bit nervous from the thunderstorm.

North Carolina A & T's Homecoming has been described as the “Greatest Homecoming on Earth”. What makes their homecoming unique? Is their football team nationally ranked? Or is it their marching band? I think it is a combination of several things… distinguished alumni, an enthusiastic student body, motivated athletes, faculty, and Aggie Pride.

Walking toward the football stadium, we are soaking in this sunshiny day. What a day! In the distance, down the hill, we see blue vendor tents, food carts, and fans are streaming to the stadium. Pre game activities are in full swing. We make our way to the VIP tent. Alumni, faculty, and corporate sponsors are talking and visiting before the game.

Arriving at the post office this morning, I joined a long line of customers waiting to be served. The post office was quiet with the exception of one lady. She was giving a message to the entire group waiting in line.

Her voice was elevated. She was giving her thoughts concerning judgment, provision, bills, mocking God, and a host of other subjects. She repeated several times, “ I am not ashamed of my faith.” While the scene seemed odd, I did not sense that she was having a mental breakdown. Nor did I feel like anyone was in danger.

It seems that the group has made a silent agreement; we will be quiet and mind our own business. Two ladies in the front of the line were talking quietly. A gentleman behind me was looking at the cards in the display case. I stood quietly with my packages prepared for mailing. It was an awkward moment.

In a quiet moment, she looked at me and said, "I like your cross. “I thanked her.

As she approached the counter, the clerk looked at her with apprehension. By then, she was quiet. Their conversation was without incident. Then, she left the post office.

This incident has caused me to ponder issues about sharing about is important to us. I don’t think it is odd when people ring bells and stand by red kettles during the holidays and at Christmas. I don’t cringe when the Girl Scout take orders for cookies. I wonder what caused her boldness. What is happening in her world?

She was nearly shouting…her words did not seem to be motivated by love.

Chocolate - Granola Apple Wedges

2 ounces semisweet chocolate, finely chopped

1/3 cup low-fat granola without raisins

1 large Braeburn apple, cut into 16 wedges

1. Place chocolate in a medium microwave safe bowl. Microwave at HIGH 1 minute, stirring every 15 seconds, or until chocolate melts.

2. Place granola in a shallow dish. Dip apple wedges, skin side up, in chocolate; allow excess chocolate to drip back into bowl. Dredge wedges in granola. Place wedges, chocolate side up, on a large place. Refrigerate 5 minutes or until set.

Do you have a favorite radio program? I enjoy a classical music station on Sirius/XM radio. I also listen to Keeping It Real on Station 128. I think the objective of this radio personality is to provoke his listeners to anger. I have to tune him out....
When possible, I listen to the Satellite Sisters. These sisters always have something interesting to share. Daily topics may include discussions about plastic surgery, decorating, travel, parenting issues, employment, dating, or planning a wedding. They make daily life funny and entertaining. Their program is available via podcast.

My favorite radio program is Thru the Bible Radio with Dr. J. Vernon McGee. Listening to Dr. McGee's teaching reminds me how the Bible truth's transcends time, culture, gender, and geography. Practical applications make the program relevant to daily life. Here is a link: TTB

Tonight, Jerry and I had dinner at the cafe at Joseph Beth. After dinner, we listened to Bob Edwards read from his memoir , A Voice in the Box My Life in Radio. Bob Edwards is the host of a show on Sirius XM Radio and Bob Edwards on Public Radio International (PRI). I think his best interviews are about topics specific to Kentucky. His series on Mountain Top Removal in Kentucky is excellent.

Remembering Martha

When I think of Cousin Martha.... I remember her sweet smile, her kindness, her tender love for her son and grandson. She was too ill to attend this year's Carter Family Reunion. Tomorrow her services will be held at the Holy Angels Catholic Church, 615 E. Oakwood Blvd. Chicago.

She lived a rich full life. In spite of trials and heartaches, she displayed such quiet grace and faith in God. She converted and became a Catholic as an adult. She will be missed. I know that her brother, grandson, nieces, and cousins will celebrate her life tomorrow morning. We will miss her.

When doctors and nurses have done all they can do, we trust in a loving and sovereign God. When medical treatments have reached their limits, people of faith simply trust God. Walking in the hallway to visit a family member, I see this mission statement:

This afternoon we visit a loved one at hospital that is a part of the SSM Health Care System.

My prayer is that my loved one can fully embrace that healing can mean spiritual as well as physical. Our sin sick souls can be healed.

I wish I had an invitation to attend this wedding. These ladies are so beautiful. In the background, I could hear swishing... the little girls were twirling around in their pretty dresses. Ah, weddings! The lobby was filled with a lovely mix of conversation and laughter.

On a different note, tomorrow, Liz and Calvin will celebrate their first anniversary! Happy Anniversary!

With a smaller group of relatives at this year’s Carter Family Reunion, I was able to spend more focused time with cousins. Whether we were eating lunch together, visiting a museum, or traveling in a car, we enjoyed come lively conversations.

Marriage is for grown folks… I know that's right.

Married for eighteen months… they decided to get a divorce. This is a sad but true story. They had a beautiful wedding. Sadly, there is no storybook ending. They were not able to work things out. How is that possible? I don’t know.

Our first year of marriage was difficult. Fighting on our honeymoon. In our first apartment, one of us tossed keys on the lawn. Years later, we are mellow…we have our ups and downs. We negotiate, compromise, listen, and pray. We work to maintain a strong prayer life. In addition, we work to be have close relationships within our small group from church. We schedule date nights. Simple fun. Now, we can look back and laugh at some of our past escapades. We have to own and admit our failings and sins. In the midst of if all, God is faithful.

Happy Anniversary Jimmy and Joyce! Yesterday, they celebrated 47 years of marriage.

We were able to spend time together during this year's Carter Family Reunion during the Labor Day Weekend.

It has been a long day. I was up 5:00 a.m. this morning to say good bye to my family. They were returning to North Carolina. After the good byes, I wanted to go back to bed and snuggle in the smooth sheets. I did not have time for more sleep. For the next ten hours, I did laundry, washed silverware, prepared three dishes, cooked brownies, dusted, swept the floor, folded clothes, washed table linens, cleaned bathrooms...

I was looking forward to sitting down to dinner... to visit and relax....

After a long day, I enjoyed tonight's dinner.

If you know me, I love celebrations. I enjoy the planning, the details, the anticipation.... During the event, I love the conversations, laughter, and the unexpected surprises. Yesterday, I joined with friends to celebrate Kati who is in the process of moving out of state. It was a joy to spend time with these lovely ladies. I think this quote is so appropriate...

When I listen to the song “Signed, Sealed and Delivered, I'm Yours” by Stevie Wonder, it makes me smile. I appreciate the song’s lyrics, the background singers, and of course Stevie Wonder’s amazing voice. I was reminded of this song last week when I reading a devotional, from Charles Spurgeon’s, Morning and Evening . check it here : spurgeon
