Watch Night Services

John Wesley Bobble head on our deck.
I am sad that two of Lexington's
Christian Bookstores will close their doors in 2013.
Cokesbury and Family Christian Bookstore will close.
I thought Watch Night Services were only observed in African American Churches.
I was surprised to learn that John Wesley actually originated the services in 1740.
Tonight, our church will offer a service that will begin at 10:00 p.m.  Our congregation will spend the evening in song, prayer, worship and then hear a message.
I love spending the remaining hours of 2012 in prayer and worship. In addition, what a wonderful way to begin 2013... in prayer.

My True Love

As a child, one of my favorite childhood Christmas carols was The Twelve Days of Christmas.  I enjoyed the repetition. The lyrics made no sense to me.  The song was simply fun to sing. Did my music teacher explain the song’s meaning? I don’t remember. It is only recently that I discovered the significance of the lyrics.

According to Fr. Gilhooley, English Jesuits wrote this carol as a catechetical device in the 16th century. For a short history of this Christmas carol’s you might visit this site: www.catholic.net.
Once at the site, look for the Real Meaning of the Twelve Days of Christmas.

Pet of the week, Evie

This week's pet is Evie from our neighborhood. Evie is a little bundle of sweetness. Look at her adorable face.

Donna  (Evie's owner) and I became acquainted when we were members of the same discussion group in BSF.  At the time, we were studying the book of Genesis.   Now, several years later, BSF classes around the world are again studying the book of Genesis.  It is like studying the scriptures again for the first time. God's word is always fresh and relevant .

Earlier this month, her daughter was one of the dancers in the Nutcracker Ballet.

A gift for Jesus

If you were able to give a gift to Jesus what would it be?  Earlier this month, our BSF leader posed this question to us at leader's fellowship. Here are two of the answers I remember, joy and thanksgiving. As we read the Bible, we see that the wise men  brought Jesus gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. What is your answer?

As Christians, we give our love and gratitude to Him.  We might smile sweetly and say, I give Him  my time, talent, and tithe. Sadly, I find myself more concerned about what I want rather than praying about how the Lord will direct my life.

Over the past several weeks,  I confess have been giving Jesus my pain.  Does that sound odd?  This pain is a hot burning pain in my knee. It grips my leg. It moves me to tears.  This pain is not a sweet little gift wrapped up in a pretty box. Arthritis hurts.

In reality it is hard to wrap my mind around the truth that Jesus takes all .... the sins of the world... pain, disappointment, pride, selfishness, stinky, smelly.... He takes it all. What a joy that God that can handle the pain and suffering of the world. God loves us.

Christmas Message of Hope

The Christmas message is that there is hope for a ruined humanity  -- hope of pardon, hope of peace with God, hope of glory – because of the Father’s will Jesus became poor, and was born in a stable so that thirty years later He might hang on a cross.

Shopping on Christmas Eve

Why would I go shopping on Christmas Eve? Hmmm...To buy a gift for my husband.  Although Jerry said he did not want or need any gifts, I had to find something for him.  At 8:30 this morning, I decided to go shopping.  As we headed to the mall, we saw no traffic! Woo Hoo!

Macy's Sale!   Buy one tie ~ get one free! Buy one shirt ~ get one free! Plus, we were able to use the "After Christmas Sale Discount"

After shopping, we treat to ourselves to skinny drinks at Starbucks.

This afternoon I will wrap gifts and relax.

Pet of the week, Willy

Willy
A Shiba Inu is considered to be one of Japan's most ancient breeds.
They are intelligent and loyal.
This is one my friend's  Koko's dogs.
She has another dog that was featured earlier this year.
"A dog doesn't care if your rich or poor, big or small, young or old. He doesn't care if your not smart or popular, not a good joke-teller, not the best athlete, nor the best-looking person. To your dog, you are the the smartest, the nicest human being who was ever born. You are  his friend and his protector."

What are conversations reveal about us...

It looks scary in that elevator.  “No, That  stuff only happens in the movies. “

After tutoring this morning, I met this gentleman working on the elevator.  As usual, I have my camera handy.  My question…. May I take you picture?  That is my informal request for release of information form.   J
He is one of the professionals who works for a company that maintain elevator safety across the Commonwealth of Kentucky.

We talk about current events.  As we continued talking, I think to myself, I think he is a Christian. As conversation was winding down, he shared that he is a pastor at a church in Georgetown, Kentucky.
In a short conversation, individuals reveal what they hold dear by the content of their speech. I know that he values God's word, study, and sharing God's truth to his congregation.
As I was leaving to go home. I snapped a picture of the company truck.
I like that is "An Employee  Owned Company.

His handiwork

"The secret is to regard our  bodies as beautiful gifts from God, miracles of His handiwork chosen by Him to be His living temple on earth and to be glorified forever in heaven."
Unknown

I appreciate quotes that inspire me and declare truth. That is why I like this quote.  Our bodies are amazing. As I grow older, I appreciate my body and health. I sometimes have taken my health for granted. I cannot undo the past, I simply have to take of my body.

This afternoon, I had an appointment at St. Joseph. I was in a MRI machine. I remained still as the  machine was clicking around me. Over the next few weeks, I anticipate appointments and discussions of plans.

I will treat my body, my health, and each day as a gift from God.

Elevator

Stepping into this elevator was a bit like taking a step back in time. The accordion doors were cool.

Today's morning book club met at a local church here in Lexington.
